8th Annual Healthy Aging Conference

All proceeds from the conference benefit the Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center. 

The conference features dynamic speakers in the field of healthy aging, a delicious lunch, and opportunities for seniors to connect with a variety of senior service providers.  The price is $40 and includes lunch.

Join Elizabeth St.John, critically-acclaimed best-selling local author, as she introduces and discusses a variety of novels written by author friends from around the world.  In a social and relaxed environment, we'll discuss the writer's journey from inspiration to perspiration, discover insider techniques and tricks, and practice basic writing crafts from three-act drama to character arcs.  Elizabeth's author friends will provide personal insights on their books and own inspiration, from classic novels to historical events and family stories.

Learn the New 2023 National

Mah Jongg League (NMJL) Card

with Grace Decker

This is a special class to prep players on adjusting to the new NMJL Card. The class will be about an hour of information and discussion followed by coached play.

 

Grace Decker was introduced to Mah Jongg 15 years ago and was immediately committed to take on this complex game.  After years of play, and a drive to build community, Grace began Mah Jongg instruction using interactive training techniques and has been successfully teaching formal instruction for the previous 8 years.  Grace is recognized as a Top 20 National Tournament Player.

There is a $50 fee paid to the instructor.

Capturing Your Creativity with

Haiku Workshop 

with Susan Farese

 

 

 

Haiku is an ancient form of Japanese Poetry,

typically consisting of 3 lines, written with 17 syllables (5-7-5) 

and often about seasons and/or nature.

 

Join Susan for a 2-hour engaging, interactive and fun workshop. She will present a PowerPoint presentation, share several of her photography prompts (from nature/seasons) and give you ample time for reflection to start, enhance and celebrate your Haiku writing journey!

 

Susan J. Farese, MSN, RN, is the owner/ president of  SJF Communications.  She has a master’s degree in Nursing in Adult Health and a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Susan has presented numerous continuing education classes, seminars, and keynotes and is the author of the book Poetic Expressions in Nursing…Sharing the Caring, and has published poetry and articles on a variety of topics.

Beginner Mah Jongg

a 4- class series

In this 4-week series, you will learn the basics of playing American Mah Jongg according to the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) Rules & Guidelines.  This will be a small class with individual attention, hands-on activity, and real play time.  You will learn the tiles, rules, play, and strategy – and have fun doing it!

Calling All Chess Players! 

 

 

 

 

Researchers have found evidence that playing chess may result in improved brain function, memory, cognitive abilities, and strategic thinking.  Each Tuesday from 2:00-4:00 pm, enjoy a friendly game of chess at the Senior Center.  All levels of players are welcome.  Free instruction for beginners.  Tables and playing pieces are provided.

Balance & Movement to Reduce Falling

with Mordy Levine 

Mordy Levine is an instructor of yoga, Tai Chi, karate, and meditation.  Mordy is the creator of the Meditation Pro Series that teaches meditation for different conditions that affect Western civilization (e.g., stress, insomnia, weight issues, smoking).  To date, over 900,000 people have learned to meditate through his series of meditation programs.

 

  • Learn & practice easy movements to improve balance and reduce risk of falling.

  • Reduce onset of cognitive decline, like dementia.

  • Reverse Osteoporosis.

  • Learn basic forms of Tai Chi.

  • Emphasis is on posture, balance, muscle relaxation & breathing.

  • Develop stability & coordination and gain confidence.

Art with Jan O'Hara

Join Jan and other artists for a weekly art class.  Bring your own project to work on or begin a new with Jan's step-by-step instruction.  This can be done in oil, acrylic, watercolor, or colored pencils.  Students will need to bring their own supplies. 

There is a $20 fee per class paid to the instructor.

Chair Yoga

with Peggie Moore

Peggie Moore, is a certified Yoga Instructor (RYT500), Reiki Master, and has also received her certification as a BEWELL Yoga for Cancer teacher. Peggie has practiced yoga her entire adult life and is passionate about working with every age, size, shape, and ability who has the desire to find their way to yoga and to a healthier, happier life. This class will teach you ways in which you can reduce stress, improve well-being, and improve your strength and flexibility. Appropriate modifications are provided for students.

Conversational Spanish

with Jeannette Caruth

Jeannette Caruth, who learned Spanish solely through conversation, invites you to become more familiar with the language.  Each class is a one-hour adventure of hearing and speaking another language. Her partner, Luis Gallardo, is Colombian and will be present to delight us with his beautiful Spanish spoken words.  All levels are welcome.
