Ian C. Neel, M.D.

"Brain Health Plan"

As physicians, we frequently get caught up in dealing with problems pharmacologically. Unfortunately, the pharmacologic benefits of drugs for cognitive impairment are minimal. While less well studied, evidence suggests non -pharmacologic interventions may have strong benefits for both the prevention of dementia as well as slowing the progression of cognitive impairment. A brain health plan is a comprehensive approach to reviewing these interventions which may include: review and address physical health concerns, review medications for polypharmacy and cognitively detrimental side effects, increase physical activity, increase mental activity, and increase socialization.

Dr. Neel is a board certified geriatrician at UC San Diego Health specializing in the evaluation and management of memory disorders. He serves as the medical director for the geriatric medicine consult service at Senior Behavioral Health, as well as a consultant for the university's Brain Health & Memory Disorders program.

Jon will discuss the relationship between purpose and aging, how when approached thoughtfully, they can intertwine to create a life of fulfillment and meaning. Contrary to common misconceptions, aging isn't just about counting the years; it's about embracing new opportunities, passions, and connections that can infuse our lives with purpose at every turn. By exploring real-life examples and evidence-based strategies, we'll uncover the transformative power of purpose in aging gracefully and with intention. Together, we'll embark on a journey to unlock the secrets of longevity, vitality, and purposeful living, demonstrating that with the right mindset and approach, each passing year can be a stepping stone toward a more purposeful and fulfilling life.

Jonathan is the founder of Partner in Aging. With more than a decade of experience serving older adults in San Diego, Jonathan is known for solving some of the dilemmas that inevitably come with aging. Jonathan received a master’s degree from USC in Aging Services Management and has been featured locally in the Del Mar Times, Encinitas Advocate and La Jolla Light for his frequent symposiums on aging well.

"Healthy Longevity:

A Geriatrician's Perspective"

Alison Moore, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., discusses the keys to healthy aging: staying active, mentally engaged, socially connected, having a positive outlook, and being resilient. Dr. Moore emphasizes the importance of these factors for a long and healthy life.

Alison A. Moore, MD, MPH, FACP, AGSF, is a Professor and Chief of the Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology and Palliative Care, Vice Chair of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Department of Medicine and interim Director of the Stein Institute for Research on Aging and the Center for Healthy Aging. She holds the Larry L. Hillblom Chair in Geriatric Medicine. She is a geriatrician who provides primary and consultative care to older adults and a public health researcher whose work focuses principally on older adults with unhealthy substance use. She also has interests in healthy aging, gerontechnology, health equity, and aging and HIV. Dr. Moore also has a passion for mentorship and, in 2019, she was awarded the UC San Diego Health Sciences Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Award.
